Service Procedure
FIGURE 1:
A. Install Air Cleaner Grommet
1. Remove the air cleaner cover and clamp it carefully in vise.
2. Drill 7/16 inch hole in cover next to the stud bolt and hose retention bracket as shown in Figure 1.
3. Insert grommet, from end of supplied air bleed control valve harness, into hole.
4. Reinstall air cleaner cover.
B. Install supplied air bleed control valve harness. Harness is assembled as provided and requires connection to existing components as described below:
1. Insert in-line harness connector into grommet on air cleaner cover.
2. Remove hose from PCV valve nipple and insert large harness tee in end of PCV hose.
3. Connect short harness hose to PCV valve nipple.
4. Locate CVSCC (black valve) in front of engine on the left side of the thermostat housing. Pull back to protective covering and cut the nylon tubing, connected to the inboard part of the CVSCC (closest port to the housing), about two inches from the valve and remove one inch of tubing.
5. Cut two one-inch pieces of bulk 1/8 inch vacuum hose and attach to the cut ends of the tubing.
6. Install the small harness tee into the two vacuum hoses.
C. Reset basic engine timing and idle speed.
1. Warm the engine to the normal operating temperature.
2. Retard the basic engine timing 4 degrees from the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label value using the applicable 1983 Service Manual procedure.
3. Locate the idle speed specification on the VECI label.
^ If the idle speed reads 775 rpm, set the speed to 850 rpm using the Service Manual procedure.
^ If the idle set speed reads 900 rpm, readjust the idle speed to 900 rpm.
D. Install the Vehicle Emission Control Information update label.
1. Wipe the existing VECI label clean.
2. Use the following chart to select the proper new VECI update label from the parts package.
If the existinq label reads: Install new label #
Altitude Timing Idle Speed
Low 10~ BTC 775 RPM C3940355
Low 15~ BTC 900 RPM C3940356
High 6~ BTC 900 RPM C3940357
High 15~ BTC 900 RPM C3940358
3. Affix the appropriate new label to cover the right portion of the original label.
