Bosch Starter Motors

The Bosch starter used on 1.7 and 2.2 L engines is a direct drive starter motor with an overrunning clutch type starter drive. A solenoid switch is mounted on the starter motor.
The Bosch starter used on 2.5 L engines is a gear reduction starter. The starter uses six permanent magnets in place of conventional wound field magnets to save weight. The gear reduction system uses a planetary gear train to transmit armature rotation to the pinion shaft. A solenoid switch is mounted on the starter motor drive end shield.
