NUMBER: 23-015-01

GROUP: Body

DATE: June 29, 2001

SUBJECT:
Glovebox Latch Rattle

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the glovebox latch assembly with a revised part.

MODELS:

2001 (ST) Sebring/Stratus Coupe

NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO NOVEMBER 16, 2000 (MDH1116XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may have a glovebox latch that exhibits a rattling condition or a loose lock cylinder. The cause may be fatigue of the cylinder retaining tab or crush ribs during cylinder installation. The revised part includes changes to the retaining tab/crush rib area (Fig. 1) and incorporates a plastic slider to reduce vibration (Fig. 2).

DIAGNOSIS:

Make sure the condition originates from the glovebox latch and is not caused by items stored in the glovebox. Open the glovebox and remove the latch assembly from the door.

Inspect the slider for material type (Fig. 2). If the material is metal, proceed with the Repair Procedure. If the material is plastic, further diagnosis will be required.

PARTS REQUIRED:

NOTE:
THE PART NUMBER FOR THE REVISED ASSEMBLY DID NOT CHANGE FROM THE ORIGINAL PRODUCTION PART. THE SLIDER (Fig. 2) MUST BE INSPECTED FOR MATERIAL TYPE. THE NEWEST ASSEMBLY WILL HAVE A PLASTIC SLIDER. OBSOLETE PARTS WILL HAVE A METAL SLIDER.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the lock cylinder from the removed latch assembly as follows:

a. Insert the ignition key into the lock and rotate the cylinder to the unlocked position.

b. Insert a small screwdriver (jewelers type) or pick into the lock tumbler opening (Fig. 2)

c. Press the lock cylinder retaining tab downward and rotate the key/lock cylinder counter clockwise 1/4 turn (90 degrees).

NOTE:
THE LOCK RETAINING TAB IS THE FURTHEST TAB FROM THE OPENING. USE A FLASHLIGHT TO SEE THE RETAINING TAB.

d. Pull the key cylinder from the latch assembly.

2. Make sure the key cylinder is in the unlocked position and insert the key cylinder (with key) into the new latch assembly p/n MR791347.

3. Rotate the lock 1/4 turn (90 degrees) clockwise to secure the key cylinder in the latch.

4. Confirm lock operation prior to installing the latch assembly in the glovebox door.

5. Assemble the latch into the glovebox door and confirm proper operation before returning the vehicle to the customer.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
