Brakes - Front Brake Squealing

NUMBER: 05-005-02

GROUP: Brakes

DATE: Sep. 2, 2002

SUBJECT:
Brake Squeal

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the caliper support with a new design.

MODELS:
2001 - 2003 (ST) Sebring/Stratus Coupe

NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO ALL 2001/2002 MODELS AND 2003 MODELS BUILT TO JULY 23, 2002 EQUIPPED WITH A 3.0L ENGINE AND 15 INCH SINGLE PISTON BRAKE ASSEMBLY.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may exhibit a squeaking sound from the front brakes. This sound typically occurs at low speeds with light brake applications (possibly noticed in parking lot maneuvers). This sound may be caused by the brake caliper support and brake disc reaching a natural frequency that can be heard as a squeak or squeal.

DIAGNOSIS:

It is important to make a note of the conditions present when the customer recognizes the brake squeak (speed, while turning, light brake applications, etc.). Verify the noise so when repairs are made, they can be confirmed for effectiveness. If this condition is identified, and no other contributing causes from brake pads or discs can be determined, perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the caliper to support bolts and separate the brake caliper (Fig. 1), carefully setting or hanging it aside, being careful to not stretch or twist the brake hose.

2. Remove the caliper support from the front knuckle assembly and replace with the new part. Tighten the caliper support mounting bolts to 100 +/- Nm (74 +/- ft. lbs.).

3. Reattach the caliper to the caliper support.

NOTE:
DURING ASSEMBLY OF THE NEW CALIPER SUPPORT, MAKE SURE TO APPLY BRAKE GREASE TO THE GUIDE AND LOCK PINS (CALIPER PINS) AND THE CALIPER SUPPORT. MAKE SURE THE PIN BOOTS ARE ATTACHED SECURELY IN THE PROPER PLACE.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 on the other side of the vehicle.

5. Reassemble the vehicle and verify proper brake operation and elimination of the sound by duplicating the method used to identify the problem.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
