Interior - High Seat Sliding Effort
NUMBER: 23-038-02GROUP: Body
DATE: Sep. 2, 2002
SUBJECT:
Seat Slide Effort
NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO MODELS WITH MANUAL SEATS.
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adjusting the seat tracks to reduce slide effort.
MODELS:
2001 - 2003 (ST) Sebring/Stratus Coupe
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Poorly adjusted or installed front seats can make it difficult for the seat locks to engage simultaneously (synchronize) or can cause increased effort to slide the seat fore and aft. Parallelism and/or pitch of the seat track rails can affect this condition.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the seat slide effort is high or feels ratchety during adjustment, perform the Repair Procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Remove the plastic covers from each of the anchoring corners (1 front-2 rear). Gain access by sliding the seat fore or aft.
2. Loosen both nuts (front) and remove both bolts (rear).
3. Move the seatback to the most upright position. Maintain this position until the adjustment procedure is complete.
4. Slide the seat to the most rearward position. Make sure that both tracks are locked in place and the fore/aft release handle in the front part of the seat, is down (locked position).
NOTE:
MAKE SURE THE RIGHT AND LEFT TRACKS ARE LOCKED AT EQUAL POSITIONS, IF THEY ARE NOT THE SEAT WILL NOT OPERATE SMOOTHLY.
5. Tighten the front outboard anchor bracket nut first. Torque the outboard nut to 30 +/-5 N.m (22 +/- 4 Ft Lbs). Next tighten the front inboard anchor bracket nut. Torque the inboard nut to the same value.
6. Slide the seat to the most forward position. Make sure both tracks are again locked in place, and that the fore/aft release handle is down (locked position).
7. The holes in the floor pan should be visible through the rear anchoring brackets. Both rear bolts can now be installed and torqued 44 +/- 10 N.m (33 +/- 7 Ft Lbs), in any order.
8. If the seat does not operate smoothly and easily, the outboard rear anchor bracket bolt should be loosened and the anchor bracket moved inboard approximately 2 mm and the bolt retightened. If seat lock synchronization is not symmetrical (even side to side), the inboard rear anchor bracket may also be adjusted.
9. If the seat slide effort becomes too high after step 8, the rear anchor brackets may be adjusted back slightly outboard. Start by adjusting only one rear anchor. Recheck the performance after each adjustment.
