Repair Procedure

NOTE:
Whenever a controller is programmed, the software in the DRBIII(R); must be programmed with the latest revision level available (version 58.0 or higher for this bulletin).

NOTE:
If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the flash process should be restarted and then follow the directions on the DRBIII(R).

1. Before beginning the reprogramming procedure, remove any old flash files from the DRBIII(R) memory. To clear the memory from the MAIN MENU:

a. Simultaneously press the "MORE" and "YES" keys.

b. A screen will appear requesting a "COLD BOOT".

c. Follow the on screen instructions by selecting the "F4" key.

d. When the DRBIII(R) reboots to the MAIN MENU, proceed to Step 2.

2. Record the 17 character VIN on the repair order for later reference.

3. With the ignition switch in the "RUN" position, determine the part number of the PCM software before flash reprogramming. Connect the CH9043 MUX Cable, and the DRBIII(R) (with the CH9044 Crossfire Software card plugged into it); to the vehicle. Using the DRBIII(R) select:

a. "DRBIII(R) Standalone"
b. "1998 - 2005 Diagnostics"
c. "2004 - 2005 Crossfire"
d. "System Select"
e. "Engine"
f. Record the ten (10) character "P/N" on the repair order for later reference.

4. Disconnect the DRBIII(R) from the CH9043 MUX Cable.

5. Remove the CH9044 Crossfire Software card from the DRBIII(R).

6. Disconnect the CH9043 MUX Cable from the vehicle.

7. Connect the DRBIII(R) to TechCONNECT. Open TechTOOLS and verify that the "DRBIII Status: Connected" message appears in the upper right corner of the TechTOOLS screen.

8. Enter the PCM software P/N recorded in Step # 3 in the "Parts Criteria" window or manually enter the VIN or the Year/Model/Engine information.

9. Select "Show Updates".

10. Highlight the correct flash file.

11. Select the "DRBIII" radio button which is next to the "Download/Update" button.

12. Select the "Download/Update" button.

13. Monitor the "Flash Download/Update Progress" window on the TechCONNECT and follow the instructions on TechCONNECT/DRBIII(R). When the flash file has completed downloading to the DRBIII(R), proceed to next step.

14. Disconnect the DRBIII(R) from TechCONNECT.

15. Open the hood, install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides approximately 13.5 volts.

16. Turn ignition switch to the "LOCK" position.

17. To reduce battery drain during the flash process, disconnect the radiator fan control module connector (Fig. 1).

NOTE:
In the next step DO NOT connect the CH9043 MUX Cable or have the CH9044 Crossfire Software Card inserted in the DRBIII(R). Connect only the DRBIII(R) and the CH7000A Cable to the vehicle.

18. Connect the DRBIII(R) and CH7000A Cable to the vehicle.

19. Turn ignition switch to the "RUN" position.

20. Download the flash file from the DRBIII(R) to the vehicle. Using the DRBIII(R) select:

a. "Vehicle Flash"

b. Follow the directions on the DRBIII(R) screen. When the flash process is complete, proceed to the next step.

21. When the "Update controller label..." screen appears, record the new ten (10) character "P/N" on the repair order for later reference.

22. Disconnect the DRBIII(R) and CH7000A Cable from the vehicle.

23. Open TechTOOLS.

24. Open the "Device Options" pull down menu and select "Module Replacement".

25. Open the "Select Module" pull down menu and select "PCM".

26. Select the appropriate "Transmission Type" button (Manual or Automatic).

27. Carefully enter the 17 character VIN.

28. Carefully enter the PCM software pin after flash reprogramming recorded in Step # 21 above.

29. Select the "Calculate" button at the bottom of the window.

NOTE:
TechTOOLS will automatically populate the "Coding String", "SCN", and "CheckSum" information.

30. Print the information from the TechCONNECT PC.

31. Connect the CH9043 MUX Cable, and the DRBIII(R) (with the CH9044 Crossfire Software card inserted); to the vehicle. Using the DRBIII(R) select:

a. "DRBIII(R) Standalone"

b. "1998 - 2005 Diagnostics"

c. "2004 - 2005 Crossfire"

d. "System Select"

e. "Engine"

f. "Miscellaneous Functions"

g. "Read PCM Coding"

h. Verify that the PCM coding string on the DRBIII(R) matches the coding string on the sheet printed from the TechCONNECT.

NOTE:
The SCN on the DRBIII(R) may not match with the SCN printed from TechCONNECT. This is OK.

32. Turn ignition switch to the "LOCK" position.

33. Connect the radiator fan control module connector (Fig. 1).

NOTE:
Due to the PCM programming procedure, a DTC may be set in other modules (TCM, BCM, I/C, SKREEM, etc.) within the vehicle, if so equipped. Some DTC's may cause the MIL to illuminate. Check all modules, record the DTC's, and erase these DTC's prior to returning the vehicle to the customer. Erase any DTC's in the PCM only after all other modules have had their DTC's erased.

NOTE:
The following step is required by law.

34. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n 04275086AB and attach near the VECI label (Fig. 2).
