Convertible Top: Testing and Inspection
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - CONVERTIBLE TOP OPERATION
The Convertible Top on the Crossfire Roadster is fairly typical of convertible tops. It is power operated, but requires the driver to manually latch and unlatch the top from the windshield. One switch on the console operates the top. To lower the top, release the top latches with the "D" ring latch handle. When the "D" ring latch handle is released, the windows should immediately go down. Push the "D" ring latch handle up and raise the top away from the windshield (over center position). Press and hold the power top switch to the open position. The top should then fold itself back into a top storage compartment behind the seats.
NOTE: The top must complete an open or close cycle. Not completing the cycle will cause the Power Top Control Module (PTCM) to lose track of the top position. The cycle is completed when the operator hears a single audible tone at the end of the cycle. Be sure to hold the switch until the single audible tone sounds.
NOTE: This service bulletin aids the technician with diagnostics for the convertible top electronics and NOT the hydraulic system. The technician should verify that the hydraulic system is functioning properly prior to proceeding with this service bulletin.
TROUBLESHOOTING THE CONVERTIBLE TOP SYSTEM:
TOP WILL NOT OPERATE
1. Start the engine to ensure there is proper battery voltage. Battery voltage must be above 10.6 volts.
2. Check the 25 Amp White Fuse in Cavity 5 in the Underhood Accessory Fuse Block. If necessary, replace fuse and diagnose the problem. Refer to the service information available on TechCONNECT.
3. **Proceed as follows:
4. Check to ensure the Spoiler is either fully deployed or retracted. If not and the spoiler switch in the center stack is blinking diagnose and repair the spoiler.
5. With the top all the way up or all the way down, ensure that the trunk switch changes state when the power top switch is actuated.
6. Check the rear cargo compartment divider to ensure it is unfolded and secured in the vertical position. If the divider is in its stowed position, first unfold the panels towards the rear of the vehicle. Pull up on the vertical panel using the center cutout, and hook the pins at the top into the brackets mounted to the cargo compartment trim on each side near the forward edge of the decklid opening. The pins must be hooked in these brackets in order for the top to operate.
7. Check to ensure the decklid is closed and latched.
8. Check to ensure the top storage compartment cover (tonneau cover) is closed and latched completely.
9. Check to ensure the rear window section of the convertible top (rear bow) is latched and locked completely.
10. Check to ensure the top is secured in the closed position. This is accomplished when the "D" ring latch handle is latched and locked. After the top is closed and latched the LED in the power top switch should turn off.
11. Begin with the engine running and with the top in the closed and latched position. When unlocking the D ring latch handle, the windows should immediately go down. If the windows do not go down check the status of the "Latch Retainer Sw" using the DRBIII(R). It should change from closed to open. If the switch is not functioning properly, diagnose and replace the switch if necessary. Monitor the status using the DRBIII(R), the CH9043 MUX cable, and the CH9044 Crossfire software card version 5.2 or higher, select:
a. DRBIII Standalone
b. 1998 - 2005 Diagnostics
c. 2004 - 2005 Crossfire
d. System Select
e. Body
f. Power Top Control Module
g. Input/Output Display
12. Using DRBIII(R) check for DTCs in the PTCM and the Body Control Module (BCM).
13. If no DTCs are present in either module and the convertible top is up, proceed to "Convertible Top Is Up And Will Not Go Down" section of this service bulletin.
14. If DTCs are present in the BCM, repair and erase the DTCs before proceeding.
15. If DTCs are present in the PTCM, repair and erase any DTCs between 9003 and 9921. If DTC(s) 9930 through 9938 are present in the PTCM and the convertible top is down, perform the "Convertible Top Emergency Operation". Refer to the information in the Owner's Manual. If DTC(s) 9930 through 9938 are present and the convertible top is up, proceed to "Convertible Top Is Up And Will Not Go Down ".
CONVERTIBLE TOP IS UP AND WILL NOT GO DOWN
1. Check the rear cargo compartment divider to ensure it is latched correctly and the switch is functioning. The switch is located on the left cargo compartment divider latch in the trunk. If the switch is not functioning, diagnose and replace the switch if necessary.
2. Using DRBIII(R), check to see that the "Top Open Switch" reads open. This status message can be affected by either the top open switch or the cargo compartment divider switch. If the cargo compartment divider is in place, this status message should change from closed to open when you push the top up after it is unlatched. If so, it is working correctly. If it reads closed you can manually operate the switch by pushing it in and verifying state on DRBIII(R) under the "Input/Ouput Display" menu. The switch is located on the right top frame rail between the header bow and the 2nd bow. If the switch does not change states diagnose and replace the switch if necessary.
3. Check the decklid status using the DRBIII(R) under "Input/Output Display". The status should display closed.
4. Check the decklid lock actuator status using the DRBIII(R) under "Input/Output Display". The status should display closed.
5. If DTC(s) 9930 through 9938 are still present and the top is up, check to be sure the rear bow of the convertible top is latched to the tonneau cover and the tonneau cover is latched.
6. If all switches are operating correctly and the rear bow and tonneau cover is latched the Power Top Control Module should recognize the position of the top to enable operation.
