Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
CYLINDER HEAD & VALVE ASSEMBLY SERVICESome engines may be equipped with cylinder heads which have oversize journals. When servicing the cylinder head on these engines, proper replacement components must be installed. To identify over size cylinder head journals, the top of the bearing caps are painted green and ``O/S J'' is stamped on air pump end of head.

REMOVING & INSTALLING VALVE SPRINGS
Cylinder Head On Engine
1. Rotate crankshaft until piston is at TDC on compression stroke.
2. Apply 90 - 120 psi of compressed air into spark plug hole of valve spring being removed.
3. Using tool 4682, compress valve spring enough to remove valve stem locks, Fig. 24.
4. Remove valve spring and spring seat.
5. Remove valve seal.

On 1982 models, oil leaks in the left front head gasket area may be found. If oil leakage is found, loosen cylinder head bolts 1/4 turn and retorque according to specifications.
When removing cylinder head, remove cylinder head bolts in proper sequence, Fig. 25.

CAMSHAFT BEARING CAPS
Some engines may be equipped with camshafts which have oversize journals. When servicing the camshaft on these engines, proper replacement components must be installed. To identify oversize camshaft journals, the barrel of the cam is painted green and ``O/S J'' is stamped on the air pump end of the camshaft. Never install an oversize journal camshaft in a cylinder head with standard size bores, or cam cap breakage could result.
1. With caps removed from engine, check oil holes for obstructions.
2. With caps aligned in proper sequence, make sure arrow on caps 1, 2, 3 and 4 point toward timing belt, Fig. 27.
3. Apply suitable sealant to No. 1 and 5 bearing caps.
4. Install caps before installing camshaft seals, then torque cap bolts to 165 inch lbs.
