Beginning with February, 1983 production, A-465 manual transaxles incorporate a press fit 5th input gear and a threaded input shaft. The threaded input shaft will facilitate removal and installation of the press fit gear without the necessity to remove the transaxle from the car.

The removal and installation procedure for changing the 5th input gear in the car is as follows:

1. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly for access to the transaxle end cover.

2. Remove the transaxle end cover.

3. Remove the 5th synchronizer strut retainer plate snap ring.

4. Remove the 5th speed strut retainer plate.

5. Remove the 5th speed synchronizer assembly and fork.

6. Remove the 5th input gear snap ring.

7. Using the alternator pulley removing tool (Miller #C-4333), remove the 5th input gear.

8. Remove bearing support plate and bearing retainer plate, clean, and reseal with RTV to prevent potential oil leaks due to the RTV seal being broken loose when removing the cover, 5th gear set, and synchronizer assembly.

9. To reinstall the gear, use the 5th input gear installation tool (Miller #C-4810) and draw the input gear fully onto the splines.
10. Install a new copper colored 5th gear snap ring (PN 6500837).

11. Reinstall the 5th speed synchronizer assembly.

12. Reinstall the 5th speed strut retainer plate.

13. Install a new snap ring on the 5th speed strut retainer plate.

14. Reinstall the end cover and seal with RTV.

15. Fill with fluid and check operation.
