Fig. 27 Circlips installation. Early 1982 models:

On early 1982 models, install new circlips on inner joint shaft before installation.
1. On early 1982 units, be sure tangs on circlips are aligned with flattened end of shaft before inserting shaft into transaxle. If not, jamming or component damage may result.
2. Hold inner joint assembly at housing while aligning and guiding the inner joint spline into transaxle.
3. While holding the inner joint housing, quickly thrust the shaft into the differential. This will complete the lock-up of the driveshaft to the axle side gear. On early 1982 models, inspect circlip positioning in side gears to verify lock-up.
4. Push knuckle/hub assembly out and install splined outer C/V joint shaft into hub.
5. Install knuckle assembly on ball joint stud.
6. Install and torque clamp bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
7. Install speedometer pinion.
8. On early 1982 models, apply a 1/16 inch bead of silicone sealant, part number 4026070, to differential cover sealing surface and mating surface of transaxle case after both have been properly cleaned and inspected.
9. On early 1982 models, install differential cover and torque retaining screws to 165 inch lbs. (19 Nm), then fill differential to bottom of filler plug hole with Dexron automatic transmission fluid.
10. Install washer and hub nut. Torque hub nut to 180 ft. lbs. (245 Nm). Install locknut and cotter pin.
11. If, after attaching driveshaft assembly in vehicle the inboard boot appears collapsed or deformed, vent the inner boot by inserting a round tipped, small diameter rod between the boot and shaft. As venting occurs, the boot will return to the normal shape.
