Removal

Fig. 23 Driveshaft assembly. Late 1982 - 84 G.K.N. axles. (similar to 1984 A.I.S. axles):
On early 1982 models, the inboard C/V joints have stub shafts splined into the differential side gears and are retained with circlips. The circlip "Tangs" are located on a machined surface on the inner end of the stub shafts and are removed and installed with the shaft. On late 1982 - 84 models, the driveshafts are spring loaded and are retained to the side gears by constant spring pressure provided by the spring contained in the C/V joints.

Fig. 26 Compressing circlips. Early 1982 models:
1. On early 1982 models, drain transaxle differential unit and remove cover.
2. If removing the right hand driveshaft, the speedometer pinion must be removed prior to driveshaft removal.
3. On early 1982 models, rotate driveshaft to expose circlip tangs. Using needle nose pliers, compress circlip tangs while prying shaft into side gear splined cavity. The circlip will be compressed in the cavity with the shaft.
4. Remove clamp bolt securing ball joint stud to steering knuckle, then, separate ball joint stud from steering knuckle. Do not damage ball joint or C/V joint boots.
5. Separate outer C/V joint splined shaft from hub by holding C/V housing while moving knuckle hub assembly away from C/V joint. Do not damage slinger on outer C/V joint. Do not attempt to remove, repair or replace.
6. Support assembly at C/V joint housings and remove by pulling outward on the inner C/V joint housing. Do not pull on the shaft. If removing left hand driveshaft assembly, the removal may be aided by inserting a screwdriver blade between the differential pinion shaft and carefully prying against the end face of stub.
7. Remove driveshaft assembly from vehicle.
