VANS, WAGONS & FRONT SECTIONS W/STANDARD HEATER

LESS A/C

1980-87 Models


1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect heater core hoses.
3. Disconnect temperature control cable from heater core cover and blend air door crank.
4. Disconnect blower motor feed wire from resistor block located on distribution duct in cab.
5. Set coolant overflow tank aside.
6. Remove nuts retaining heater assembly to side cowl and nuts retaining heater assembly to dash panel, then remove heater assembly from vehicle.
7. Remove heater core cover, then remove the two heater core retaining screws and remove heater core.
8. Reverse procedure to install.

WITH A/C

1980-87 Models


1. Discharge refrigerant from system.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
3. Place a waterproof cover over alternator to prevent coolant from spilling over it, then disconnect and plug heater core hoses.
4. Disconnect refrigerant lines at H-valve, then remove two screws from filter drier bracket and position lines aside. Cap all refrigerant lines. Disconnect temperature control cable from cover.
5. From inside vehicle, remove glove box, spot cooler bezel and appearance shield.
6. Through glove box opening and under instrument panel, remove screws and nuts retaining evaporator housing to dash panel.
7. Remove the two screws from flange connection to blower housing. Separate evaporator housing from blower housing and carefully remove evaporator housing from vehicle.
8. Remove cover from housing, then remove heater core strap retaining screw and remove heater core.
9. Reverse procedure to install.


VANS, WAGONS & FRONT SECTIONS W/AUXILIARY HEATER

1980-87


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect inlet and outlet hoses from heater.
3. On models with auxiliary air conditioning, proceed as follows:
a. Remove auxiliary housing lower cover attaching screws, then the heater core tube seal and cover plate.
b. Remove heater core support bracket attaching screws, then the support bracket.
c. Remove heater core from housing.
4. On models less auxiliary air conditioning, proceed as follows:
a. Remove heater to floor pan attaching nuts, then disconnect blower motor electrical connectors.
b. Remove heater assembly from inside of vehicle.
c. Remove heater cover to heater assembly attaching screws. The heater core is assembled to the cover and will be removed as the cover is removed.
d. Remove heater core from heater cover.
5. On all models, reverse procedure to install.
