SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Complaints of slow engine warmup on subject model vehicles resulting in low heater and defrost output temperatures, may be resolved by following repair procedure and installing parts listed below. Parts must be ordered separately.
Parts Required:
Qty Name Part Number
1 Clamp 870469
2 Clamps 4041608
1 Cap 2128425
1 Gasket 4179895
1 Thermostat 4105768
1 "T" Connector 4266410
REPAIR PROCEDURE
The repair consists of relocating the heater return hose to allow the engine coolant to bypass the radiator and decrease the warm-up time. A new improved thermostat will also be required for a vehicle built prior to March 1, 1983.
1. Completely drain cooling system.
NOTE: Removal of the coolant control EGR switch from the top of the thermostat housing will allow air to enter the cooling system to aid in more complete draining.
2. Replace old thermostat and gasket using new thermostat PN 4105768 and gasket PN 4179895.
NOTE: Vehicles built after March 1, 1983 will have the new thermostat already installed.
3. Disconnect heater return hose from radiator.
4. Position cap PN 2128425 over radiator heater return nipple and secure with clamp PN 870469.
FIGURE 1:
5. Cut lower radiator hose and remove a one inch section as indicated in Figure 1.
6. Insert "T" connector PN 4266410 into radiator hose and loosely install clamps PN 4041608 on either side.
7. Connect heater return hose to "T" and install clamp. Rotate "T" connector in lower hose so that heater hose is not interfering with linkage or other components. Tighten clamps to hold "T" connector in this position.
8. Place heater in heat mode, fill cooling system until coolant begins to run out of thermostat housing EGR valve hole, then install and tighten coolant control EGR switch (this will allow any trapped air to bleed from system).
9. Finish filling system, check for leaks, and verify heater operation.
