SYMPTOM/CONDITON

Rattling or buzzing noise in shifter. The noise can occur in any gear, usually most audible at 2000 to 3000 rpm.

DIAGNOSIS

Place vehicle in first gear and, with hand off the shift knob, accelerate to an engine speed of 4000 rpm (20 to 25 mph). Close throttle and allow vehicle to decelerate to idle speed while listening for rattle. Repeat this test with hand on the shift knob. If noise is silenced by placing hand on the shift knob, perform the following repair procedure.

PARTS

Silicone Rubber Silencer PN 4340107 (5 req'd.)

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Carefully pry shift rod end fitting off ball stud.

2. Install Silicone Rubber Silencer, PN 4340107, on ball stud.

3.. Using channel lock pliers, snap shift rod end fitting over ball stud.

4. Repeat Steps 1-3 until all five shift linkage ball joint silencers have been installed.

5. Road test vehicle to assure that condition is corrected.
