Parking Brake System: Adjustments
Parking Brake Cable Routing:
Vehicles built prior to July 11, 1984 may experience high pedal effort when applying the parking brake. On these models, follow procedure "A," and all other models , follow procedure "B."
PROCEDURE A
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Release parking brake, then tighten adjusting nut until both rear wheels drag and are difficult to turn.
3. Loosen adjusting nut until both wheels turn freely. From this point, loosen adjusting nut an additional 25 turns.
4. Apply parking brake two times to seat all components.
5. Start engine and apply parking brake 15 clicks. With automatic transaxle in Drive or manual transaxle in 1st gear, both rear wheels should slide under engine torque.
6. Apply and release parking brake with ignition on to verify that instrument panel warning light shuts off. If light remains lit, tighten adjusting nut one turn at a time until system operates properly.
PROCEDURE B
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Release parking brake and back off cable adjustment to slacken cable.
3. Tighten cable adjusting nut until a slight drag is obtained while rotating wheels.
4. Loosen cable adjusting nut until rear wheels rotate freely, then an additional two turns.
5. Apply and release parking brake to check for proper operation. The rear wheels should rotate without dragging.
