Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Scribe alignment marks on hood and hood hinge, then remove hood.
3. Drain cooling system, then disconnect radiator hoses at radiator and engine.
4. Remove radiator and fan shroud, then remove air cleaner.
5. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and position aside with hoses attached.
6. On models equipped with power steering, remove power steering pump from mounting bracket and position aside with hoses attached.
7. On all models, drain crankcase and remove oil filter.
8. Disconnect electrical connectors at alternator, carburetor and engine.
9. Disconnect fuel line, heater hose and accelerator cable.
10. Remove alternator from mounting bracket and position aside.
11. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then remove starter motor.
12. Remove transaxle case lower cover and place alignment marks on flex plate and torque converter, then remove converter to flex plate attaching screws. Attach a C-clamp to front lower portion of converter housing to retain torque converter in housing when engine is being removed.
13. Install a suitable transmission holding fixture and attach a suitable engine lifting device.
14. Remove right hand inner splash shield, then disconnect ground strap.
15. Remove right hand engine mount to insulator through bolt. Mark insulator position on side rail to assure correct positioning during installation.
16. Remove transmission case to engine block attaching bolts.
17. Remove front engine mount to bracket attaching bolt, then carefully lift engine from vehicle.
18. Reverse procedure to install.
