SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Lack of power when at highway speed during cool or cold weather. Lower temperatures, along with high humidity, will aggravate this condition.

DIAGNOSIS

This condition can be diagnosed by driving the vehicle at highway speeds in ambient temperatures near freezing. The interior of the air cleaner box, element, and induction hoses will be coated with condensate. In extreme cold, the condensate will have turned to ice.

PARTS REQUIRED

Driveability Kit PN 4419436

1 Aspirator/Filter Assembly PN 4287369
1 Cap, Air Cleaner Nipple PN 4201111
1 Heated Air Sensor Package PN 4397729
1 Authorized Modification Label PN 4275086

NOTE: ASPIRATOR/FILTER, PN 4287368, MUST BE REPLACED EVERY 30,000 MILES.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This repair moves the aspirator air supply from the air cleaner to a separate filter assembly.

NOTE: 1987 MODELS HAVE A RESONATOR ASSEMBLY INSTALLED WHICH TAKES THE PLACE OF THE Y-PIPE DESCRIBED IN THE REPAIR PROCEDURE.
1. Remove the nut securing the air horn assembly to the carburetor, lift the air horn assembly, and remove both vacuum hoses from the air cleaner temperature sensor.

2. Remove the air temperature sensor from the air horn by gently prying up on the push nuts.

3. Install new sensor, PN 4397729, into the air horn and secure with the new push nuts supplied in the kit. Connect the vacuum hoses to the new sensor.

4. Disconnect the aspirator hoses at the "Y" pipe (resonator on 1987 models) - (Figure 1).

5. Disconnect the hose attaching the "Y" pipe (resonator on 1987 models) to the air cleaner at the air cleaner end.

6. Remove the air cleaner mounting nut securing the aspirator "Y" pipe (resonator on 1987 models). On some vehicles it may be necessary to remove all air cleaner mountings and lift air cleaner out of the way (Figure 2).

7. Remove the "Y" pipe (resonator on 1987 models) with the air cleaner hose attached and discard assembly.

8. Install the rubber cap, PN 4201111, from the kit on the now open tube at the bottom of the air cleaner. This is accomplished by simply pushing it over the opening (Figure 2).

9. Reinstall the air cleaner, leaving the nut off which secured the "Y" pipe (resonator on 1987 models).

10. Install the aspirator filter assembly, PN 4287369, from the kit onto the stud on which the "Y" pipe (resonator on 1987 models) was previously installed (Figure 3).

11. Connect the aspirator hoses to the open nipples on the filter assembly (Figure 3).

12. Install Authorized Modification Label, PN 4275086 (Figure 4), near existing VECI label.
