SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Engine oil level 3/8" or more below the full mark after proper oil and filter change on some subject model vehicles equipped with 318 cu. in. engines.
DIAGNOSIS
Inquiries should be made to ensure oil changes and levels checks are being done properly before any repairs are attempted. A proper change consists of draining the oil on an unloaded, level, and fully warmed up vehicle to a dripping condition. Replace and tighten the drain plug. Replace the oil filter and add six quarts of oil, fully warm the engine. Shut off the engine and allow to cool for five minutes, then check engine oil level. If engine oil level is below the full mark, proceed with the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure involves cutting 1/2" from the top end of the dipstick tube.
1. Remove dipstick from dipstick tube.
2. Carefully insert a small piece of cloth on a light wire into the dipstick tube (this piece of cloth is to stop any foreign matter from falling into the tube during the cutting operation).
3. Using a tubing cutter or a hacksaw, cut 1/2" from the top of the dipstick tube. Care should be exercised to assure the cut end is square.
4. Carefully remove all burrs from the cut end, then remove the cloth and wire from the tube.
5. Daub a spot of white paint near the top of the tube for identification so that it will not be cut a second time.
6. Install dipstick in tube and verify that it reads correctly.
