SYMPTOM/CONDITION

The folding arm rests used in the front bucket and 2-passenger first rear seat may have noticeable looseness or shake, or complete loss of support.

DIAGNOSIS

The above conditions are caused by one or both of the following:

^ Loss of retention of arm rest armature by retainers (star washers) on support pin.

^ Armature cracked or broken.

If either of the above conditions exist, correction will require replacement of the arm rest pad and armature assembly, the support assembly, and attaching screws/washers. The improved design 1988 replacement parts must be used.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure outlines replacement of the arm rest pad and armature assembly, support assembly, and attaching screws/washers.

1. Remove the failed arm rest assembly from the support assembly on the seat back.

2. Remove the trim cover from the arm rest assembly. If the cover is not damaged, retain for re-use.

3. Discard the pad and armature assembly.

4. Remove the support assembly from the seat back, and discard.

5. Install the new support assembly on the seat back using three M6 screws PN 6501539 (Figure 1).

FIGURE 2:

6. Install the trim cover on the new pad and armature assembly. If the original trim cover is re-used, align the pre-cut holes in the cover with the pivot and stop bolt holes in the armature. If a new cover is used, the holes should be cut after using a suitable probe to establish the hole centers on the proper side (Figure 2).

7. Install the flat washer and stop bolt on the pad and armature assembly as shown in Figure 1.

8. Position the arm rest assembly over the wavy washer on the support assembly, oriented so that the head of the stop bolt passes through the detent in the support bracket and becomes trapped behind the inside surface of the bracket in the full up or full down position.

9. Pull back the arm rest cover to expose the pivot hole (Figure 1).

10. Install the screw and washer assembly into the threaded hole in the pivot pin on the support assembly (Figure 1).

11. Pull the cover back around the rear of the arm rest assembly to secure the zipper.
