Visual Inspection
In order that the ignition and fuel systems function properly, all electrical, vacuum or air hose connection must be complete and tight.
Terminals in electrical connections must lock together. Look for connectors that are not fully plugged into each other or terminals that are not fully plugged into the insulator.
All hoses must be fully and firmly fitted at their connections. Look for hoses that are not fully plugged in or are pinched and cut.
The following must be checked before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure.
1. IGNITION SYSTEM COMPONENTS
A. Connectors at computer.
B. Pickup coil connector at distributor.
C. Spark plug wires.
D. Coil wire (cap and coil connections).
E. Connectors at coil.
F. Starter relay.
2. FUEL CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Connector at dual solenoid.
B. Connector at coolant switch.
C. Connector at oil pressure switch.
D. Connector at choke.
E. Connectors at carburetor 6-way connector.
F. Carburetor ground switch.
G. Engine harness to main harness connector.
H. Battery cables.
I. Battery ground on engine.
J. Engine to firewall ground strap.
K. Oxygen sensor connector.
L. Oxygen sensor test connector.
M. Computer ground at left fender shield.
N. Connector at speed sensor (manual transmission only).
3. PCV SYSTEM
A. Hose between intake manifold and PCV valve.
B. Hose between breather module and air cleaner.
C. PCV valve plugged in.
D. Correct PCV valve. Should be black in color.
4. COMPUTER
A. Vacuum line from Tee connector to vacuum transducer.
B. Vacuum lines from Tee connectors to carburetor.
5. EGR SYSTEM
A. Vacuum line from carburetor to EGR CVSCC.
B. Vacuum line from EGR CVSCC to EGR valve.
6. AIR DELIVERY SYSTEM
A. Hose from air pump to air pump relief valve.
B. Vacuum line from tee to CVSCO valve. (California)
C. Vacuum line from CVSCO valve to bleed. (California)
D. Vacuum line from bleed to air switch relief valve. (California)
E. Hose from air pump to air switch relief valve. (California)
F. Hose from air pump relief valve to exhaust manifold. (Federal)
G. Upstream air hose from air switch relief valve to exhaust manifold. (California)
H. Downstream air hose from air switch relief valve to catalyst. (California)
7. EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Pressure line from air pump relief valve to external bowl vent valve. (Federal)
B. Pressure line from air switch relief valve to external bowl vent. (California)
C. Hose from carburetor to external bowl vent valve.
D. Hose from external bowl vent valve to vapor canister.
E. Vacuum line from tee connector to vacuum controlled orificed tank vapor valve (VCOTVV).
F. Hose from vapor canister to vacuum controlled orificed tank vapor valve.
G. Hose from vacuum controlled orificed tank vapor valve to fuel tank.
H. Vacuum line from tee connector to purge solenoid.
I. Vacuum line from purge solenoid to vapor canister.
J. Purge hose from vapor canister to "Y" connector.
K. Purge hose from "Y" connector to check valve.
L. Purge hose from check valve to carburetor.
M. Purge hose from "Y" connector to purge orifice.
N. Purge hose from purge orifice to carburetor spacer.
8. CHOKE SYSTEM
A. Hose between carburetor and plastic connector.
B. Hoses between the 3-way connector and choke pull off diaphragm and the heater air door sensor.
9. HEATED AIR DOOR SYSTEM
A. Hose between air sensor and door diaphragm.
B. Hose between air cleaner and exhaust manifold heat stove.
10. POWER BRAKES AND/OR SPEED CONTROL
A. Hose between manifold and power brake booster.
B. Hose between power brake booster and speed control servo or intake manifold and speed control servo.
11. HEATER/AC SYSTEM
A. Vacuum hose at water valve.
B. Vacuum supply hose to instrument panel control.
12. ALTITUDE COMPENSATOR
A. Hoses between carburetor and altitude compensator.
B. Hose between altitude compensator and filter.
13. IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM (Vehicles Equipped with Solenoid Kicker)
A. Vacuum hose between tee and vacuum control solenoid.
B. Vacuum hose between vacuum control solenoid and vacuum kicker diaphragm.
14. CARBURETOR (Vacuum Operated Secondary V.O.S.)
A. Vacuum hose between vacuum diaphragm and control solenoid.
