Visual Inspection
A visual inspection for loose, disconnected or mis-routed wiring and hoses should be made prior to attempting to diagnose fuel injection system malfunctions. The visual inspection should include the following checks:
1. Ensure that vacuum connections on throttle body are secure.
2. Ensure that throttle body electrical connections are secure.
3. Inspect alternator and ensure that electrical connectors are secure and that belt is properly adjusted.
4. Check two-way connector at each injector. Check vacuum hose connection at fuel pressure regulator and intake plenum connector.
5. Ensure that MAP sensor hose is securely connected at firewall connection and at sensor.
6. Check coolant and charge temperature sensor electrical connections.
7. Inspect fuel pump and fuel lines, ensuring that pump electrical connectors and fuel hoses are securely connected.
8. Inspect EGR valve, ensuring that components are securely mounted and free from leaks.
9. Ensure that black and white 60 way connector is securely seated in proper sockets in SMEC.
10. Ensure that 14 way connector is securely seated in proper sockets in SMEC. When inspecting system electrical connectors, ensure that connector terminals are not bent or damaged, preventing proper current transfer. Do not clean conductive grease from connector cavities, where applicable, as this could adversely affect system performance.
11. Ensure that purge solenoid and distance sensor two-way connectors are secure.
12. Check oil pressure sending unit for proper connection.
13. Ensure that coolant sensor is properly mounted in thermostat housing and that electrical connector is secure.
14. Ensure that 4 wire distributor connector and oxygen sensor lead connector are secure and free from corrosion.
15. Inspect engine harness connectors, ensuring that terminals are not bent or damaged and that connectors are properly locked.
16. Ensure that all relay electrical connectors are fully seated and that battery cable connections are clean and free from corrosion.
17. Ensure that radiator fan relay and radiator temperature sensor connectors are properly seated.
18. Inspect ignition system primary and secondary wiring, ensuring that all connections are secure and free from corrosion.
19. Ensure that neutral safety switch is operating properly and that electrical connector is secure.
20. Ensure that engine ground strap is secure at dash panel and intake manifold.
