Visual Inspection
In order that the ignition and fuel systems function properly, all electrical, vacuum or air hose connection must be complete and tight.
Terminals in electrical connections must lock together. Look for connectors that are not fully plugged into each other or terminals that are not fully plugged into the insulator.
All hoses must be fully and firmly fitted at their connections. Look for hoses that are not fully plugged on or are pinched and cut.
The following must be checked before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure.
1. IGNITION SYSTEM COMPONENTS
A. Connectors at Computer.
B. Pickup coil connectors at distributor.
C. Spark plug wires.
D. Coil wire (cap and coil connections).
E. Connectors at coil.
F. Connectors at starter relay.
2. FUEL CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Connector at dual solenoids.
B. Connector at coolant sensor.
C. Connector at oil pressure switch.
D. Connector at choke.
E. Connector at carburetor 6-way connector.
F. Carburetor ground switch.
G. Engine harness to main harness connector.
H. Battery cables.
I. Battery ground on engine.
J. Engine to firewall ground strap.
K. Oxygen sensor connector.
L. Oxygen sensor test connector.
M. Computer ground at left fender shield.
N. Connector at speed sensor (manual transmission only).
3. CARBURETOR
A. Vacuum line at choke.
B. Vacuum lines at choke pull off delay valve.
C. CVSCC vacuum line.
D. Vapor canister hose.
E. Hoses at check valve in vapor canister hose.
F. Heated air temperature sensor vacuum line.
G. Bowl vent hose.
H. Solenoid kicker vacuum line.
I. Altitude compensator vacuum lines.
J. CVSCO vacuum line.
4. EGR SYSTEM
A. EGR valve vacuum line connector.
B. CVSCC vacuum line connector.
5. HEATED AIR INTAKE SYSTEM
A. Heated air temperature sensor vacuum lines.
B. Heated air diaphragm vacuum line.
6. EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEM
A. VCOTVV hose at vapor canister.
B. VCOTVV hoses and vacuum line.
C. Vent hose at vapor canister.
D. Vapor canister purge hose.
E. Hoses at TEE in purge hose system.
F. Purge hoses at the orifice (intake manifold hose).
G. Purge hose at the intake manifold.
H. VCOTVV hose at fuel tank.
I. Bowl vent hose at vapor canister.
J. Hoses at thermal bowl vent valve.
K. Hoses and vacuum line at external bowl vent valve.
L. Purge signal vacuum line at vapor canister.
M. Purge solenoid vacuum lines.
7. AIR SWITCHING SYSTEM
A. Upstream and downstream hoses at air switching/relief valve.
B. Air pump hose at air switching/relief valve.
C. Air pump hose.
D. CVSCO vacuum line at air switching/relief valve.
E. Vacuum lines at bleed. (Located in vacuum line between CVSCO and air switching/relief valve).
F. CVSCO vacuum line connector.
G. External bowl vent valve vacuum line at air switching/relief valve.
8. MISCELLANEOUS
A. Correct PCV valve.
B. Hoses at PCV valve.
C. PCV valve hose at intake manifold.
D. PCV valve hose at valve cover.
E. Vacuum lines and hoses at remote vacuum manifold.
F. Hoses at filter between intake manifold and remote vacuum manifold.
G. Hoses at TEE between intake manifold and remote vacuum manifold.
H. Hoses at filter between tee and power brake booster.
I. Hose at power brake booster.
J. Remote vacuum manifold hose at intake manifold.
K. Kicker solenoid vacuum lines.
L. Altitude compensator vacuum lines.
M. Vacuum lines at tee between ESA and remote vacuum manifold.
N. Vacuum line at the ESA.
O. Hose between air cleaner and valve cover.
