Visual Inspection


In order that the ignition and fuel systems function properly, all electrical, vacuum or air hose connection must be complete and tight.
Terminals in electrical connections must lock together. Look for connectors that are not fully plugged into each other or terminals that are not fully plugged into the insulator.
All hoses must be fully and firmly fitted at their connections. Look for hoses that are not fully plugged on or are pinched and cut.

The following must be checked before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure.

1. IGNITION SYSTEM COMPONENTS
A. Connectors at Computer.
B. Pickup coil connectors at distributor.
C. Spark plug wires.
D. Coil wire (cap and coil connections).
E. Connectors at coil.
F. Connectors at starter relay.
G. Computer ground wire.

2. FUEL CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Connector at engine temperature sensor and charge temperature switch.
B. Connector at coolant sensor.
C. Connector and choke control.
D. Oxygen system test connector.
E. Connector at carburetor harness.
F. Connector at bowl vent solenoid.
G. Carburetor ground switch.
H. Connectors at Air Switching and Throttle control solenoids.
I. Connector at Purge Control solenoid.
J. Engine harness to main harness connector.
K. OConnector at speed sensor.
L. Oxygen sensor connectors.
M. Connector at vacuum electrical switch.
N. Battery cables.
O. Battery ground on engine.
P. Engine to firewall ground step.

3. CARBURETOR
A. Vacuum line at choke diaphragm.
B. Choke diaphragm vacuum line at carburetor.
C. Heated air temperature sensor vacuum line.
D. Bowl vent hose.
E. Damping canister hose.
F. CVSCC vacuum line.
G. PCV valve hose.
H. Vacuum kicker vacuum line.
I. Vacuum kicker solenoid vacuum lines.
J. Vacuum kicker solenoid at remote vacuum manifold.

4. CARBURETOR SPACER
A. Power brake booster/remote vacuum manifold hose.
B. Power brake booster/remote vacuum manifold hoses at TEE connector.

5. EGR SYSTEM
A. EGR valve vacuum line connector.
B. CVSCC vacuum line connector.

6. HEATED AIR INTAKE SYSTEM
A. Heated air temperature sensor vacuum lines.
B. Heated air diaphragm vacuum line.
C. Heated air delay valve vacuum lines.

7. EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Damping canister hoses.
B. Damping canister hose at vapor canister.
C. VCOTVV hose at vapor canister.
D. Electric bowl vent hose at vapor canister.
E. Purge solenoid vacuum line at vapor canister.
F. Vent line at vapor canister.
G. Electric bowl vent hoses.
H. VCOTVV hoses and vacuum line.
I. VCOTVV hose at fuel tank.
J. Purge solenoid vacuum lines.
K. Purge solenoid vacuum line at remote vacuum manifold.

8. AIR SWITCHING SYSTEM
A. Upstream and downstream hoses at air switching/relief valve.
B. Air switching/relief valve vacuum line.
C. Air switching/relief valve solenoid vacuum lines.
D. Air switching/relief valve solenoid vacuum line, remote vacuum manifold vacuum line, and vacuum actuated electrical switch vacuum line at TEE connector.
E. Vacuum actuated electrical switch vacuum line.
F. Air switching/relief valve and vacuum actuated electrical switch vacuum line at remote vacuum manifold.

8. MISCELLANEOUS
A. Correct PCV valve.
B. Hoses at PCV valve.
C. Hose at breather cap.
D. Breather cap hose at air cleaner.
E. Power brake booster hose.
F. Hoses at power brake booster filter.
G. Hoses at filter between remote vacuum manifold and carburetor spacer.
H. Hoses at remote vacuum manifold.
I. ESA vacuum line.
J. Vacuum lines at TEE connecting ESA and VCOTVV to remote vacuum manifold.
K. ESA and VCOTVV vacuum line at remote vacuum manifold.
