A/T - 727/904 Reverse Squawk or Clunk

SIL 89-12 (Mar)

SUBJECT: 727/904

PROBLEM: Reverse "Squawk" or "Clunk"

SUBJECT VEHICLES:
1986-87 Passenger cars, and "D, N, W, AD, AW, and "B" Trucks

Applies to subject vehicles built before September 1, 1986. Use the following procedure to diagnose:

1. With engine off, place transmission in Neutral, and apply parking brake.

2. Raise vehicle on hoist.

3. Grasp driveshaft and rotate as far as possible in either direction. Hold in this position.

4. Using chalk or a crayon, mark a line across the pinion flange, and the edge of the axle housing.

5. Rotate the shaft in opposite direction as far as possible. Hold in this position.

6. Make a second mark on the axle housing, opposite the mark on the pinion flange.

7. Measure distance between marks on axle housing.

8. If distance between marks is greater than 1/4", axle backlash is excessive. Correct, and retest for "clunk" or "squawk".

9. If distance between marks is less than 1/4", or backlash correction does not cure problem, replace components as required, using the chart.
