SYMPTOM/CONDITION
When replacement of the upper rear main bearing oil seal is required, it will not be necessary to remove the engine from the vehicle, or the crankshaft from the engine if the following procedure is used.
TOOLS REQUIRED
1 Oil Seal Remover and Installer Tool, KD-492, or equivalent
(available at most auto parts supply stores).
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure explains seal replacement with the engine crankshaft in place.
1. Remove engine oil pan using procedure in appropriate service manual.
2. Remove rear main bearing cap, and replace seal in cap as specified in service manual.
3. Using KD-492 or equivalent, remove defective upper seal and install new one.
NOTE: CAREFULLY TRIM THE UPPER SEAL AFTER INSTALLATION TO ELIMINATE FRAYED ENDS.
4. Install rear main bearing cap.
5. Install engine oil pan using procedure in appropriate service manual.
