Fig. 10 Intake manifold bolt tightening sequence:
1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove alternator and carburetor air cleaner, then disconnect fuel line.
3. Disconnect accelerator linkage.
4. Remove distributor cap and wires.
5. Disconnect coil wires, heat indicator sending unit wire, heater hoses and bypass hose.
6. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
7. Remove intake manifold and carburetor as an assembly.
8. Remove exhaust manifolds.
9. Remove rocker arm and shaft assemblies.
10. Remove pushrods. Identify pushrods to ensure installation in original locations.
11. Remove eight cylinder head bolts from each cylinder head, then the cylinder heads.
12. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts to 50 ft. lbs., in sequence shown in Fig 8. Repeat procedure and torque all cylinder head bolts in sequence to 105 ft. lbs. When installing pushrods, rocker arm and shaft assemblies, ensure the word NOTCH on the end of the rocker shaft is pointing to the centerline of the engine and toward the front of the engine on the left bank and to the rear on the right bank. Ensure to install the long stamped steel retainers in the number two and four positions, torque to 200 inch lbs. When installing intake manifold, coat intake manifold side gaskets lightly with sealer part No. 4318035 or equivalent. Install side gaskets onto cylinder head. Clean cylinder block front and rear gasket surfaces using a suitable solvent. Apply a thin, uniform coating of a quick drying cement to the intake manifold front and rear gaskets and cylinder block gasket surface. When installing gaskets, the center hole in the gasket must engage dowels in cylinder block. End holes in the seals must be locked into tangs of head gasket. Carefully install the front and rear intake manifold gaskets. Place a drop, approximately 1/4 inch in diameter, of rubber sealer part No. 4318025 or equivalent, onto each of the four manifold to cylinder head gasket corners, Fig. 9. Carefully lower intake manifold into position on the block and cylinder heads. After the intake manifold is in place, check to see if seals are correct in place. Install the twelve attaching bolts finger tight first. Torque bolts one through four to 25 ft. lbs and remaining bolts to 25 ft. lbs in sequence shown in, Fig. 10.. Retorque bolts one through four to 40 ft. lbs. and remaining bolts to 40 ft. lbs, in sequence shown in Fig. 10.
