A/T - Converter Clutch Solenoid

SIL 87-27 (Aug.)

SUBJECT: CHRYSLER

SUBJECT:
Converter Clutch Controls on Chrysler Transmissions

Most of the parts used in the previous transmissions are still being used in these transmissions.

The main difference is the addition of a solenoid, located on the valve body, to operate the converter clutch. (See figure 1)

The solenoid is self grounding and normally open. It is energized by a computer, through a relay, with 12 volts, after the computer has read several sensors, which include:

Coolant sensor
Speed sensor
Carburetor switch
Vacuum transducer.

If there is any doubt that a Chrysler vehicle has the added electrical controls, or not, look for the electrical connector at the rear of the transmission. (See Figure 2)

The fluid flow is basically the same as the previous years, with the exception of second gear oil, now fed to the solenoid and lock-up valve. (See Figure 3)

In the previous models, governor pressure was used to shift the lock-up valve. This means that changing the tension of the lock-up valve spring will not change the speed the converter clutch applies.
