Customer Satisfaction Notification -- Excess Glycol Engine Coolant

Dear Chrysler Motors Vehicle Owner:

Your satisfaction with your 1987 Dodge truck is very important to Chrysler. To help ensure that satisfaction, we ask that you arrange to take the truck to your Dodge Truck dealer for special, free servicing of the engine coolant.

The coolant installed in the vehicle at the factory contains too much glycol anti-freeze for best freeze protection and engine cooling. This can cause the following problems:

^ The coolant may freeze at too high a temperature -- about zero degrees Fahrenheit.

^ The engine may run too hot. This can cause pre-ignition (spark knock), which in severe cases could result in engine damage.

While it would be easy for you to have your engine coolant tested at your neighborhood gas station, we must caution you that this would not do any good. The commonly used testers are unable to detect excess glycol. Because of this, and to avoid the problems listed above, we ask that you return your truck to your dealer for a "special coolant" service. Your dealer will drain some of the coolant now in the engine and replace it with a proper mixture of glycol and water. This work can be done in about one-half hour. To obtain this service:

^ Contact your dealer for an appointment. If it is convenient, we ask that you contact your selling dealer. However, if necessary, the service can be provided by any Dodge Truck dealer or other Chrysler Motors dealer.

^ Take the enclosed form with you at the time of your appointment and give it to your dealer. The form is for use by the dealer and by Chrysler to record completion of the service. The dealer will perform the service without charge.

If you have any problem obtaining the service, please contact the Chrysler Zone Office in your area. (It is listed under Service Assistance" in your Operator's Manual.) A Zone Office representative will arrange for prompt servicing of your vehicle.

We regret any inconvenience that this action may cause you. However, we believe that the special service will help to ensure your continuing satisfaction with your Dodge truck.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION NOTIFICATION #252T

EXCESS GLYCOL ENGINE COOLANT

^ Vehicles affected by this service notification contain excess glycol in the engine cooling system. This can cause:

a) Inadequate freeze protection -- only + 8~F for 100% glycol compared to

-85~F for maximum recommended concentration of 70% glycol.

b) Engine overheating and possible damage due to inadequate heat rejection.

^ Presence of excess glycol cannot be detected by the normally used coolant testers. For example, if the system contains 100% glycol, the tester will go beyond the lowest reading (off the scale) -- falsely indicating maximum protection.

^ Therefore, this procedure requires draining off some of the original mixture and replacing it with a 50/50 glycol/water mix -- this will result in the coolant mixture being 70% glycol or less.

^ For Chrysler cooling system mixtures, use a high quality ethylene glycol base antifreeze coolant with a silicate inhibitor, such as Mopar PN 4267020, Prestone

II, Peak or antifreeze containing the Alugard 340-2 inhibitor system.

^ The special service instructions in this letter apply only to 1987 Dodge Ram and

Dakota model pickup trucks built from 1/5/87 through 1/21/87.
