SYMPTOM/CONDITION High transmission shift efforts are experienced in cold weather conditions (below 30~ F, -1~ C). Reduced efforts are experienced after operating temperature has been reached or during operation in warm weather conditions.
DIAGNOSIS If transmission shift efforts are found to be high upon start up of vehicle after cold soak and then efforts are reduced as operating temperatures are reached, high lubricant viscosity may be a contributing factor.
A change to Dexron II Automatic Transmission Fluid, will reduce cold weather condition shift efforts and will not sacrifice transmission durability. Recommended service fluid change intervals should still be followed:
Normal Service 37,999 Miles (60,000 km)
Severe Service 18,000 Miles (29,000 km)
PARTS REQUIRED
2 Quarts (1.91 Liters) Dexron II
Automatic Transmission Fluid PN 4467721
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure involves draining and refilling the transmission.
1. Remove both filler and drain plugs and allow fluid to drain.
2. After fluid has drained completely. Replace drain plug and tighten to 30 ft.lbs. (41 N-m).
3. Fill transmission with Dexron II to the bottom of the filler hole (be sure vehicle is sitting in a level position).
4. Replace filler plug and tighten to 30 ft.lbs. (41 N-m).
