Timing Components: Testing and Inspection
Timing Chain Noise/Broken Chain Guide TroubleshootingA rattle from camshaft and silent shaft chain area at front of engine accompanied by a broken camshaft timing chain guide may be caused by a blocked oil feed hole to timing chain tensioner in oil pump housing. This blockage occurs when a portion of oil pump mounting gasket collapses into channel in pump cover which directs oil from main gallery in block to the chain tensioner feed hole. The lock washer between silent shaft chain guide B pivot bolt and timing chain guide may also be missing. This problem may be corrected as follows:
1. Remove chain case cover, silent shaft chain, camshaft chain and broken chain guide.
2. Remove engine oil pump, then clean all gasket material from pump and engine block.
3. Install new gasket (part No. MD060521), then the oil pump and new timing chain guide. Ensure gasket has hole cut in it.
4. Install timing chain, silent shaft chain, guides and chain case cover. Ensure chain guide B pivot bolt lock washer is in place before installing cover.
