Carburetor Replacement
REMOVALNOTE: Care should be exercised when removing any carburetor from a warm engine. Allow the engine to cool sufficiently to eliminate the possibility of accidental fuel ignition and personal injury.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable, and remove the air cleaner assembly.
2. Remove the fuel tank cap to release any pressure or vacuum accumulated in the fuel system. Place a suitable container under the fuel inlet fitting to capture any fuel that may be trapped in the line.
3. Disconnect the fuel inlet line with two wrenches, using care to avoid twisting the fuel line.
4. Disconnect the throttle linkage, choke linkage and all vacuum hoses. Disconnect the idle solenoid wire at the connector.
5. Remove the carburetor mounting nuts/bolts and remove the carburetor from the engine compartment, using care to hold the carburetor level, preventing fuel spillage from the float bowl.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Some carburetor base gaskets can be installed upside down or backwards. Carefully inspect the carburetor base and the intake manifold surface and match all the holes in the gasket before installation.
1. Place the carburetor on the intake manifold, and check the choke rod to make sure it is not trapped under the carburetor linkage.
2. Install the carburetor mounting nuts/bolts, and tighten them alternately, in small increments, to compress the base gasket evenly. Make sure all the mounting nuts/bolts are secured tightly to avoid any vacuum leaks between the carburetor and the intake manifold.
3. Connect the throttle linkage, and the fuel inlet line. Check carefully for any worn or loose vacuum hoses or connections. Verify correct vacuum routing, refer to Powertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/Diagrams/Vacuum and Vapor Hose.
4. Check to ensure that the choke mechanism operates freely and opens and closes fully when operated. Check the throttle linkage to ensure that full throttle travel is obtained when the accelerator pedal is depressed.
5. Install the air cleaner assembly, with a new filter element if the old one is dirty. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES for carburetor idle and mixture adjustments.
