SYMPTOM/CONDITION
The mounting screws for some AIS (Automatic Idle Speed) motors may be difficult to remove due to thread sealant applied during assembly.
DIAGNOSIS
Using an inch-pound torque wrench, check the torque necessary to break loose the AIS motor attaching screws. If the torque exceeds 50 inch-pounds, proceed as follows:
NOTE: AIS SCREW BREAKAGE MAY OCCUR IF MORE THAN 50 INCHPOUNDS OF TORQUE IS APPLIED TO THE SCREW.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This repair requires the heating of the AIS motor screws with a heat gun to soften the thread sealant.
1. Using the procedure in the service manual, remove the throttle body from the intake manifold.
NOTE: TURBO I AND TURBO II VEHICLES WILL NOT REQUIRE THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL.
2. Using a 1000 watt heat gun, warm the AIS screw heads and thread area of the throttle body for one minute.
NOTE: DIRECT HEAT AWAY FROM PLASTIC COMPONENTS.
3. Remove AIS screw using the correct torx head tool.
4. Install new AIS on throttle body and torque to 20 inchpounds.
5. Reinstall the throttle body on the vehicle using a new gasket and torque to 175 inch-pounds.
