Campaign - PCV System Freeze Up: Overview
88chrysler15No. 431
November, 1988
To: All Dodge and Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers
Subject: Customer Satisfaction Notification #431 --PCV System Freeze Up
Models: The Following 3.0L Engine Equipped Vehicles: 1988 Dodge Dynasty and Chrysler New Yorker 1987 and 1988 Plymouth Voyager, Dodge Caravan and Dodge Mini Ram Van
The above model vehicles equipped with 3.0L engines may experience PCV system freeze up at extremely cold temperatures. If this occurs, ice can block the crankcase vent system and cause resulting oil leaks when the crankcase becomes pressurized.
To correct the condition, affected components must be replaced. Included are a new lower-half air cleaner assembly, PCV hoses and insulator and relocation of the MAP sensor. In addition, camshaft end seals must be inspected for oil leaks and replaced as necessary.
Because of the cold weather nature of the condition, only those vehicles invoiced to dealers in the Northern U.S. are included in this notification and service action. Parts distribution and vehicle lists will be limited to these dealers. However, vehicles in other areas are eligible for the repair as needed to resolve complaints of [1][2]PCV freezing upon owner request.
Due to the large number of involved vehicles and a limited number of parts available, the recall will be implemented in several stages by Zones (coldest first). In each geographic area, parts will be distributed to involved dealers before owner notification. Notification will be in the following order:
^ Milwaukee and Minneapolis Zones and State of Alaska
^ Boston, Chicago and Denver Zones
^ Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Kansas City Zones
Note: To ensure adequate supplies for initial parts distribution in each involved geographic area, dealer orders will not be accepted until the recall has been launched in all of these areas.
Be sure to complete the service on any involved vehicles in dealer stock prior to retail delivery.
Details of this service action are explained in the following sections. As an additional service aid, a videotape has been made to demonstrate the service procedure. This feature is included in the November, 1988 M.T.S.C. program.
