SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Oil leak/seepage at rear cam plug(s) on 3.0L V-6 engines. In some extreme cases, the cam plug may be missing. This condition may be experienced on some 3.0L engines built prior to November 2, 1987 (engine date code 7-593).

DIAGNOSIS

Inspect at rear of engine on each cylinder head for evidence of oil leak/seepage or missing cam plug.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure outlines the steps necessary to replace a leaking or missing cam plug.

1. Remove air cleaner assembly from engine compartment.

2. Using a small punch and a hammer, carefully remove and discard the leaking cam plug. Clean the area of the cylinder head where the new cam plug is to be installed.

3. Apply a light coating of RTV sealer to the outer diameter of the new cam plug. Using a suitable installing tool and a hammer, install the new cam plug to a depth of .020" (.5 mm) below the surface of the cylinder head. See Figure 1.

4. Replace air cleaner. Check engine oil and add if necessary to bring oil to proper level.
