SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Rear upper and/or lower quarter trim panels crack at screw attachments. This may occur at D-pillar area or at rear of wheelhouse on right or left side (see Figure 1).
DIAGNOSIS
This condition is caused by oil dripping from the quarter window actuator cable onto the quarter trim panel. This oil is a stress cracking agent for ABS plastic material.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 Rubber Cap PN 4241618
REPAIR PROCEDURE
The following procedure outlines the replacement of the quarter trim panel and the installation of a cap to prevent a reoccurrence of the cracking condition. This cap was installed in production by mid-May, 1988.
1. Remove the cracked lower quarter trim panels following the procedures in the service manual.
2. Loosen upper quarter trim to gain access to the vent window actuator cable. (Replace upper trim panel if cracked.)
3. Wipe off excess oil, from the quarter vent window act cable snout, with Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
4. Install rubber cap, PN 4241618, on end of cable snout.
5. Install upper and lower quarter trim panels.
NOTE: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN MOUNTING SCREWS.
