SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Subject model vehicles equipped with automatic transaxles may experience a lock-up torque converter "growl" that sounds like a pulsating wind noise or percolator type of sound, when the torque converter is locked up, above 45 MPH and when the vehicle is under heavy load, such as going up a grade or pulling a trailer.
DIAGNOSIS
In order to definitely identify this condition, the vehicle must be evaluated with the torque converter clutch locked up and the vehicle under load as described above. There is only a small "window" where this condition can occur. Heavier throttle action when in this condition will cause the torque converter clutch to unlock and/or the transaxle to downshift. Any complaint where the torque converter is not locked up is not related to this Technical Service Bulletin. In addition, this condition should not be confused with engine exhaust resonance.
