Note
This Technical Service Bulletin applies only to 1987 and 1988 domestic front-wheel-drive vehicles, equipped with automatic transaxles with serial numbers of 9347-XXXX to 9621-XXXX
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
When vehicle is placed in DRIVE from any other gear position, the engagement is noticeably harsh. This condition can be aggravated by idle speeds higher than specified on the emissions label for warm curb idle.
DIAGNOSIS:
^ Park vehicle on a level surface. Set parking brake.
^ Verify correct engine idle speed per vehicle emissions label
^ Check transaxle oil level.
^ Check for proper engine mount isolator adjustment.
^ Apply service brakes, shift vehicle into drive at curb idle speeds several times. Allow 30 seconds of idle in neutral between engagements.
If unusually harsh or abrupt shift engagements are evident, the following repair procedure must be followed.
PARTS REQUIRED:
Rear Clutch Disc - 3 or 4, depending on Transaxle Application
(Brown Friction Material only) P/N 5224084
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
The above condition is caused by rear clutch discs (green or olive drab in color) which are not to specifications. These clutch discs must be replaced to correct the condition
