Removal and Replacement

REMOVAL

Remove transmission in numbered sequence, Fig. 9, noting the following:
1. Remove undercover and transfer case protector, Fig. 10.
2. Remove front exhaust pipe, then the propeller shaft.
3. Remove starter motor (13) and bellcrank bracket assembly (14) as follows:
a. Tilt transmission so rear is lowered slightly, then remove flange bolt which attaches starter motor and bellcrank bracket.
b. Position starter motor aside and suspend from body using a piece of wire.
4. Disconnect transmission assembly (15) from engine by pulling it slowly toward rear of vehicle. Remove torque converter with transmission.

INSTALLATION

Reverse removal procedure to install, noting the following:
1. Ensure transmission mounting bolt holes are aligned with centering locations, Fig. 11.
2. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from catalytic converter to lower rear of engine.
3. Install special bolt (11) so that paint applied to torque converter can be seen through check hole in driveplate. Install transmission throttle lever (8) and transmission control rod (6) with a coating of multipurpose grease on sliding parts.
4. Apply a small amount of ATF to O-ring (2) then install.
5. Ensure bolts are torqued to specifications as shown in Fig. 9.
