Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove alternator and carburetor air cleaner, then disconnect fuel line.
3. Disconnect accelerator linkage.
4. Remove distributor cap and wires.
5. Disconnect coil wires, heat indicator sending unit wire, heater hoses and bypass hose.
6. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
7. Remove intake manifold assembly.
8. Remove exhaust manifolds.
9. Remove rocker arm and shaft assemblies.
10. Remove pushrods. Identify pushrods to ensure installation in original locations.
11. Remove cylinder head bolts from cylinder head, then the cylinder heads.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque cylinder head bolts to 50 ft. lbs., in sequence shown in Figs. 10 and 11.
b. Repeat procedure and torque all cylinder head bolts in sequence to 105 ft. lbs.
c. Ensure that all torque specifications are correct.
d. When installing pushrods, rocker arm and shaft assemblies, ensure the word NOTCH on the end of the rocker shaft is pointing to the centerline of the engine and toward the front of the engine on the left bank and to the rear on the right bank.
e. Ensure to install the long stamped steel retainers in the number two and four positions, torque to 200 inch lbs.
