Transmission Noise: Overview
Most transmission noise will be caused by gears or bearings. Careful diagnosis of the noise before transmission disassembly will assist you in locating the source of the noise. It is the normal characteristic of all manual transmissions to emit some noise especially in the lower gears. It should also be noted that vehicles equipped with the rubber floor mat may emit a higher normal noise level than vehicles equipped with carpeting. Before removing the transmission for a noise complaint be sure to inspect the following:^ Shift tower boot for cuts, tears, poor aligninent or sealing at the floor pan.
^ Transmission lubricant level.
