Rear Brakes - Moan/Howl Noise

SUBJECT: Rear Brake Noise


MODELS:

1987-1988 (N) DAKOTA (4 X 2 & 4 X 4)
1989-1991 (AN) DAKOTA/DAKOTA SPORT/DAKOTA CAB & CHASSIS


SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

On some Dodge Dakotas with the 9" drum rear brakes, customers may complain of a loud moan/howl noise coming from rear brakes. This noise occurs frequently on medium deceleration stops from speeds about 20 mph, and is loudest near the end of a stop.


DIAGNOSIS:

Road test vehicle and verify that noise does exist and is coming from one or both rear wheels.


PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Brake Dampener Package 04637943

This package consists of:

1 Dampener Weight Kit (2 pieces) 04637939
1 Tee Bolt (4 pieces) 04637942
1 Locking Cam Washer (8 pieces) 83506414
1 1/4 - 20 UNC Nut (4 pieces) 00219462


REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair procedure involves installation of dampener weights on the rear brake backing plates. Illustrations used for this procedure show the brake hardware removed for clarity. Hardware need not be removed for this procedure.

1. Raise and support vehicle.

2. Remove both rear wheel and tire assemblies.

3. Remove rear brake drums.

4. Vacuum clean brake assemblies as required by OSHA standards.

5. Cover brake shoe assemblies as required to prevent contamination from drilling.

6. Thoroughly clean both sides of the backing plates above the wheel cylinders with Mopar brake cleaner or equivalent.

7. Position dampener weight in place against back side of backing plate and carefully mark hole centerline on upper edge and front groove of backing plate, Figures 1, 2.

NOTE: THE WEIGHT IS CONTOURED TO FIT INTO THE REAR OF THE BACKING PLATE WITH THE FLAT SURFACE FACING TOWARD THE DIFFERENTIAL.

8. Center punch and drill, using a 9/32 inch diameter drill bit. Drill inside of backing plate at hole alignment mark made in groove of the backing plate, Figure 3.

9. Temporarily install dampener weight using tee bolt and align weight to mark the second hole, Figure 4.

10. Carefully mark hole location and remove dampener weight. Center punch and drill second hole as in Step 8.

11. Install dampener weight, tee bolts, locking cam washers, and the 1/4 - 2O UNC nuts, and tighten to 15.8 N-m (140 in.lbs.) torque. Be certain that the dampener weight is positioned flush against the backing plate, Figure 5.

12. Repeat this procedure for other side of vehicle.

13. Install the drums, wheel and tire assemblies.

14. Road test vehicle to verify that noise is gone.
