Engine: Service and Repair

Engine and transmission should be removed as an assembly.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Mark position of hood hinges, then remove hood.
3. Remove engine undercover, then drain transmission fluid.
4. Remove air cleaner, then the radiator shrouds, as needed.
5. Disconnect radiator hoses, then remove radiator.
6. Disconnect alternator, then the starter.
7. Disconnect water temperature unit connectors, then the coil wire.
8. Disconnect battery positive cable, then the transmission harness connector.
9. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector, then the oil pressure gauge unit connector.
10. Disconnect accelerator cable, then the power steering oil pipe.
11. Disconnect air conditioner compressor pipe, then remove gear shift assembly.
12. Remove rear propeller shaft, then the No. 2 crossmember.
13. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
14. Disconnect transmission controls from transmission.
15. Attach a suitable lifting device, then remove engine and transmission assembly.
16. Remove engine to transmission attaching bolts and starter motor, then separate engine from transmission.
17. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten starter motor bolts to specification.
b. Tighten engine to transmission bolts to specification.
c. Tighten propeller shaft flange yoke attaching bolts to specification.
d. Tighten No. 2 crossmember to body bolts to specification.
e. On four wheel drive models, tighten rear insulator to transfer case bolts to specification.
f. On rear wheel drive models, tighten rear insulator to transmission bolts to specification.
g. On all models, tighten transmission control bolts to specification.
h. Tighten front insulator to engine mounting bracket nuts to specification.
