SEAL REMOVAL
Timing Belt, Sprocket, And Seals:
Crankshaft, Intermediate Shaft, Camshaft Oil Seal Removal:
1. Remove all oil control seals on 2.2L engines with factory tool (C-4679) or equivalent. On 2.5L engines the crankshaft seal must be removed using factory tool (C-4991), all other seals on the 2.5L engine use tool C-4679 for removal.
CAUTION: Do not nick shaft seal surface or seal bore.
SEAL INSTALLATION
Installing Crankshaft, Intermediate Shaft, And Camshaft Seal:
1. Shaft seal lip surface must be free of varnish, dirt or nicks. If needed polish sealing surface with #400 grit paper.
2. Install all seals on 2.2L and 2.5L engines, (except 2.5L crank seal), with factory tool (C-4680) or equivalent. The crankshaft seal on the 2.5L engine must be installed using factory tool (C-4992) or equivalent.
NOTE: On late model 1981 2.2L engines, the camshaft oil seals were changed from steel backed to uni-directional rubber backed type seals. This change made necessary an increase in the cylinder rear seal bore to prevent accidental mixing of uni-directional front and rear seals.
The replacement seal for early built 2.2L engines will also be rubber backed with arrows indication direction of rotation and location in the head marked on seal. The seals must be installed as indicated.
