Limited Slip Differential

1. Arrange friction discs and plates for each side, one on top of another, that thickness difference between left and right is less then 0.0020 inch.

2. Measure spring disc and plate thickness using suitable tool, with both extended in the same direction and one placed over the other.

3. Install pinion shaft, pressure ring, friction discs and plates, then measure.
4. Calculate (C).
5. Measure (D) between spring plate surfaces when cases (A) and (B) are combined.

6. On models except 1991-92 3.0L engines, (D=E+F-G). On 1991-92 3.0L engines, (D=E+H-F-G).
7. On all models, change friction disc thickness so clearance (D-C) between case and spring plate is 0.0024-0.0079 inch.
8. Remove spring plates, discs, friction plates and disc.
9. Install thrust washer, then squeezing V-groove, measure between right and left pressure ring rear face to thrust washer end face, ensuring difference is 0.0020 inch or less.

10. Measure (H).

11. Measure (I), between thrust washer contact surfaces with cases (A) and (B) combined. (I=J+K+D). Measurement (D) is between spring plates.
12. Change thrust washer thickness that clearance (I-H) between thrust washer and case is 0.0023-0.0079 inch.
13. Replacement thrust washers are available in 0.0591 inch, 0.0630 inch and 0.0670 inch.
14. Prior to assembly, apply suitable lubricant to all contacting surfaces.

15. Assemble differential clutch and pinion assembly.
16. After assembly, measure rotating torque of assembly using tool No. MB990988 or equivalent. Turning torque should be 29-54 ft. lbs. with used clutch plate and 18-54 ft. lbs. with new clutch plate.
17. Apply suitable sealer to drive gear attaching bolts.
18. Install and alternately torque bolts to 58-65 ft. lbs.
