DATE:
Aug. 24, 1992

SUBJECT:
Inoperative Heater/AC Blower Motor Fan Switch

MODELS:
1986-1988 (B) Ram Van/Wagon
1989-1992 (AB) Ram Van/Wagon

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Customer complaints of inoperative blower motor switch or repeated blown fuses. This condition occurs most often if the blower is operated on the "high" blower position.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Blower Motor Switch Package 4723982

Package Contents:
1 Blower Motor Wiring Assembly with Relay 4723644
5 Tie Straps 6015756
1 Instruction Sheet
1 Heat Shrink Tubing 4419644

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves replacement of blower motor switch with a revised switch and installation of a wiring harness with relay assembly.

1. With ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the steering column cover as outlined in the appropriate service manual, see Figure 1.

3. Remove the heater and A/C control assembly from the instrument panel as outlined in the appropriate service manual, see Figure 4.

4. Remove the terminal from the 4-way blower switch connector cavity 4. See Figure 2 diagram.

5. Add 1-way insulator to the terminal that was just removed and connect it to the mating insulator on the wiring assembly included in the parts package.

6. Insert the bare terminal into the open cavity in the 4-way connector of the blower motor switch.

7. Remove the instrument cluster bezel, radio and glove box as outlined in the appropriate service manual, see Figure 3.

8. Cut the 12 gauge wire at terminal # 5 on the resistor block. Tape the wire on the harness side to insulate it. Using rosin core solder, solder and heat shrink the 12 gauge DG/WT wire from the relay to the wire at the resistor block, see Figure 2.

9. Ground the eyelet terminal to the instrument panel using an existing screw.

10. Route the wire along the instrument panel wiring, and tie strap as required.

11. Disconnect the 50-way bulkhead by turning the jack screw in the engine compartment. Depress tabs and pull I/P side into the passenger compartment.

12. Remove required wedge and circuit indicated in Figure 2 diagram, and insert this circuit into the supplied insulator as shown in the diagram.

13. Insert the bare terminal from the supplied wiring assembly into the vacated cavity in the bulkhead as shown in the diagram.

14. Install the wedges and connect the bulkhead.

15. Install the steering column cover, instrument cluster bezel, radio, glove box and heater and A/C controls.

16. Connect the negative battery cable and verify the system for proper operation.
