SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1990 vehicles equipped with the A604 Ultradrive Transaxle built PRIOR TO JANUARY 1, 1990, TRANSAXLE DATE CODE K xxx 0384 xxxx may experience an intermittent loss of the signal from the PRNDL switch. This intermittent condition can cause delayed transmission engagement, harsh shift into reverse, or transmission to default to the limp-in mode, accompanied with the following fault codes: 22 "2-4 PRESSURE SWITCH ERROR" - 37 "SOLENOID SWITCH VALVE" - 39 "TURBINE OR OUTPUT CIRCUIT ERROR".
The intermittent nature of this condition allows the DRB II shift lever status to pass the test. As a result, the solenoid assembly, valve body assembly or speed sensors may have been replaced without correcting the condition.
DIAGNOSIS
Check the transaxle build date, if it is PRIOR TO TRANSAXLE DATE CODE K xxx 0384 xxxx, and no dab of white paint are found on the PRNDL and Neutral Safety switches, perform the following repair procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 - PRNDL Switch PN 5234393
1 - Neutral Safety Switch PN 5234319
1 - Washer - PRNDL PN 2408143
1 - Washer - N/S Switch PN 5234023
NOTE: THE ABOVE PARTS HAVE BEEN UPDATED. THE UPDATED PARTS CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY THE BIACK PLASTIC CARRIER WHICH EXTENDS INTO THE TRANSMISSION, AS SHOWN IN THE ILLUSTRATION BELOW.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This repair involves replacement of the PRNDL switch and the neutral safety switch.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Replace the PRNDL and neutral safety switches as outlined in the appropriate service manual.
3. Place a dab of white touch-up paint on both switches to identify they have been replaced.
4. Connect the battery negative cable.
5. Connect the DRB II, clear any exiting transmission fault codes.
6. Road test the vehicle a sufficient distance to ensure the transaxle is warm. With the shift lever in the 0D position, perform several 0 to 50 MPH accelerations, being sure the transmission shifts through all gears.
7. Using the DRB II after the road test, recheck transmission for any fault codes. if any fault codes are present, use the appropriate diagnostic procedures to repair.
