SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some 1990 - 1991 non A/C equipped vehicles with 2.2L and 2.5L engines may exhibit a rubbing or scraping noise at the front of the engine. This noise is most noticeable in the area of the camshaft timing belt cover.
The noise condition may be caused by the lower timing belt cover contacting the intermediate shaft sprocket.

DIAGNOSIS:
With the engine turned off, check the engine serial number. If the serial number is between XXXXXX0429XX and XXXXXX0838XX press on the lower timing belt cover in the area shown in Figure 1. If the cover does not flex or feels solid, perform the repair procedure.

If the lower cover flexes, or the engine serial is before or after the above numbers, continue your inspection and repair as required.
