SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Vehicles diagnosed with an engine oil leak at the cylinder head gasket need to have the original cover replaced with a cover that uses silicone rubber adhesive sealant (RTV) instead of a gasket for the cylinder head to valve cover seal.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 Cylinder Head Cover Kit P/N 5241066

KIT CONTENTS

1 Cylinder Head Cover P/N 4343496
5 Screw with Washer P/N 6100276
2 Seal, Cyl. Head Cvr. End P/N 5214479
4 Stud with Washer P/N 6500435

When sufficient quantities of the cylinder head cover kit become available, the original gasket, P/N 4315403, will supersede to the kit P/N 5241066.

NOTE: RTV SEALER, WHICH IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE KIT, IS ALSO REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS SERVICE. ORDER RTV SEALER SEPARATELY UNDER P/N 4318025.
REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure involves replacement of the cylinder head cover with a cover that uses RTV sealant instead of a gasket.

The original components--cover, gasket and fasteners--are not interchangeable and should be discarded. The original fasteners are too long to be used with the RTV-type valve cover.

1. Remove fuel tube/wiring bracket fasteners. (See Figure 1 for passenger car--Figure 2 for AN truck).

2. Remove timing belt cover.

NOTE: RETAIN TUBE BRACKET AND TIMING COVER STUD NUTS FOR REASSEMBLY.

3. Remove existing cylinder head cover, discard cover, gasket and fasteners.

4. Clean cylinder head-to-cover gasket surface.

5. Apply RTV sealant to cylinder head cover rail (Figure 3).
6. Attach cylinder head cover and seals (P/N 5214479) to cylinder head cover.

7. Install the cylinder head cover on the cylinder head, using the 4 studs/washers (P/N 6500435) at each corner of the cylinder head and install the 5 screws/washers (P/N 6100276) in the remaining holes.

CAUTION: BE SURE THAT THE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS IS ROUTED CLEAR OF STUDS AND COVER EDGES TO AVOID POSSIBLE CHAFING (Figure 4).
8. Torque the cylinder head cover fasteners to 105 in.lbs. (12 N-m).
