This Technical Service Bulletin pertains only to manual transaxles built prior to 10-16-89. The transaxle build date may be found on the identification tag located on top of the transaxle clutch housing.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Oil leaking from crossover shaft vent on top of shift cover. A revised crossover shaft has been released to eliminate this oil leakage condition.
DIAGNOSIS
Remove plastic dust cap from top of vent to verify oil leak.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 Crossover Shaft Assembly PN 4531890
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure involves the replacement of the transaxle shift housing crossover shaft assembly.
1. Remove gearshift housing from transaxle as follows:
FOR VEHICLES WITH 2.2L OR 2.5L ENGINES:
A. Remove shift cables at transaxle.
B. Invert 10 mm lock pin so that pointed end inserts into shift housing.
C. Remove reverse lamp wire connector.
D. Remove shift housing retaining bolts and remove housing from transaxle.
E. Proceed to Step 2 below.
FOR VEHICLES WITH 3.OL ENGINE:
A. Remove left side wheel housing (splash shield).
B. Drain radiator coolant by removing lower radiator hose at the radiator. BE SURE THAT COOLANT SYSTEM IS NOT UNDER PRESSURE.
C. Place floorjack under transaxle, remove left side engine mount bolt, and lower transaxle. With transaxle lowered, allow coolant to drain completely out of lower radiator hose.
D. Remove lower radiator hose at engine and plug coolant tube on the engine so that no coolant will drip into transaxle when shift cover is removed.
E. Remove shift cables at transaxle.
F. Invert 10 mm lock pin so that pointed end inserts into shift housing.
G. Remove reverse lamp wire connector.
H. Remove shift housing retaining bolts and remove housing from transaxle.
I. Proceed to Step 2 below.
Figure 1:
2. Remove vent cap (Figure 1).
Figure 2:
3. Remove external crossover lever by tapping out roll pin using a small drift punch (Figure 2).
Figure 3:
4. Remove 5-R blockout plate (Figure 3).
Figure 4:
5. Remove crossover shaft assembly (Figure 4).
6. Install new crossover shaft assembly, PN 4531890, as called out in PARTS REQUIRED.
Figure 5:
7. Install 5-R blockout plate (tighten bolts to 12 N-m [105 in.lbs.] torque as called out in Figure 5) and external crossover lever.
8. Clean gearshift housing-to-transaxle mounting surfaces and apply a 1/16" bead of MOPAR Gasket Maker PN 4318083, or equivalent, on the gearshift housing mounting surface.
9. Install gearshift housing assembly to transaxle. Tighten bolts to 28 N-m (21 ft.lbs.) torque.
10. Attach shift cables to gearshift housing, invert 10 mm lock pin so that short end inserts into shift housing, and check shifter for proper operation.
11. Additional installation steps for 3.0L applications:
A. Raise transaxle into position and install left side engine mount bolt. Tighten bolt to 81 N-m (60 ft.lbs.) torque.
B. Install lower radiator hose. Tighten hose clamps to 4.1 N-m (35 in.lbs.) torque.
C. Refer to "COOLING SYSTEM" section of appropriate Service Manual for correct procedure to refill the cooling system.
D. Install left side wheel housing (splash shield).
POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
