Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove alternator, then the throttle body air cleaner and the fuel line.
3. Disconnect accelerator linkage.
4. Remove distributor cap with spark plug wires attached, then disconnect coil wires, heat indicator sending unit electrical connector, heater hose and bypass hose.
5. Remove closed ventilation system, evaporation control system and cylinder head covers.
6. Remove intake manifold and throttle body as an assembly.
7. Remove exhaust manifolds.
8. On 1988-91 models, remove rocker shaft assembly and pushrods. During disassembly note location of pushrods so they can be installed in the same position.
9. On 1992 models, remove arm assemblies and pushrods. During disassembly note location of pushrods so they can be installed in the same position.
10. On all models, remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder heads.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 8. Tighten head bolts to specifications.
b. Tighten intake manifold bolts in sequence shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
